Since the New Gods were introduced in 1971, by Jack "The King" Kirby. They have been featured in several comic book series. Here are (more or less) all of them.

Kirby introduced the Fourth World, the "universe" which houses the New Gods, in the pages of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen via a brief cameo by Darkseid in #134. In subsequent issues, Darkseid loomed over the characters with two weapons: the Earth-based, yet Apokolips-armed, Intergang; and two of Darkseid's "monster-makers" from Apokolips, Mokkari and Simyan. But with the help of Superman himself, the heroes triumphed. By the time Kirby left the book (a run that featured more than just Fourth World threats), Intergang remained a part of the Superman mythos, while Mokkari and Simyan were blown up in their "Evil Factory" (they would later be cloned by mad scientist Dabney Donovan).

Shortly after his run on Jimmy Olsen began, the Fourth World titles were launched. They consisted of The Forever People, Mr. Miracle, and The New Gods.

This run of the New Gods, which saw new human hosts of the anti-life equation and the death of Lonar, has been ignored by writers over time (in particular, Jack Kirby in his Hunger Dogs graphic novel). So characters and events that occurred within this series, and in appearances like First Issue Special #13 and this story's conclusion in Adventure Comics #459 & #460, are most likely out of continuity; that is, they never really happened...

Jack Kirby's run on the Forever People, like the New Gods, ended in 1972, with the Forever People stranded in an alternate dimension, after the death of Infinity Man in combat with Devilance the Pursuer, a warrior of Apokolips.

But Kirby stayed on Mister Miracle until 1974. In 1977, the book was relaunched, with title and numbering system intact, and ran until it was cancelled in the infamous "DC Implosion" later that year.

In 1977, after the cancellation of Mister Miracle, the New Gods family was basically homeless. They made various appearances in DC comics over the next 10 years, but there were not many significant events which involved the New Gods at all.

"In 1981, after stepping out of animation, Jack Kirby made a triumphant return to comics in 1981. He bagan at Pacific Comics in a creator owned venture. He wrote 13 issues of Captain Victory, which was obviously Orion's son. Their were many implications of his Fourth World. (Check out The Jack Kirby Collector #6. It is all-New Gods issue and talks at length about Captain Victory as related to New Gods and Fourth world.) Jack admited to many close colleagues that Captain Victory was Orion's son, the reason he was doing this a bit more covertly was because he didn't own his Fourth World creations at DC. Then DC called him and asked him to return to finish his saga. He returned and he wrote a finished part to the color New Gods reprint. Then he did a standard 24 page Hunger Dogs. There were some editorial problems because it seemed Jack wanted to kill of Orion or Darkseid...well no one knows for sure. So DC was afraid to tell Jack that they didn't want to lose publishable characters but they wanted to have him finish his epic. Obviously this would be a confict of interest as they wanted to use Darkseid in Super Powers. So they rearranged the original pages of the Hunger Dogs and had Jack write and draw extra pages. That is why only some of the pages, the original, are inked by Royer. And you'll notice huge Techno Kirby borders added to the regular comic size original pages in the Graphic Novel. Anyway, as compensation, DC began the Super Powers figures and Series. DC gave Kirby several sizable checks for the outstanding toy sales and thanking him."
My thanks to Stephen Michael Menendian for this addition to the New Gods Library!

In 1984, Kirby's run on the New Gods was reprinted in a Baxter format 6-issue run. The interesting part came when isue 6 came out: a new New Gods story! Not only was it new, but it led into Jack Kirby's graphic novel work, "The Hunger Dogs," released that same year. This was, technically, Kirby's conclusion to the New Gods saga, but two problems occurred:

  1. many people, even Kirby himself, admitted it wasn't the best ending there could have been, and...
  2. the "franchise" has generated a modest popularity that would keep the saga alive for years to come.

Then in 1987, the New Gods received a boost in attention and popularity. When Legends, which involved the evil plotting of Darkseid in an attempt to discredit the heroes of Earth, proved successful and led the way to a new Justice League book, Mister Miracle and Oberon became members of the new team. He received his own one-shot special that year, courtesy of Mark Evanier and Steve Rude.

The mini-series (which introduced some things that have been "retconned" by others, namely the anti-life being) resulted in the launch of a brand new New Gods title, which ran from 1988 to 1990.

Mister Miracle also enjoyed a surge in popularity thanks to his involvement in the (quite entertaining and amusing) Justice League title, which changed names from Justice League to Justice League International to Justice League America (then Justice League Europe was introduced, which later became Justice League International vol.2, but since ol' Scott Free wasn't part of that series, no further mention needs to be made)

He received his own series, his second, which ran from 1988 to 1991.

After 1991, the New Gods family again had no titles of their own. But this time there seemed to be more various appearances throughout the DC Universe.

But that changed in 1995, when the New Gods were again given their own title.

Shortly after this title debuted, a one-shot special by Paul Kupperberg and Stefano Raffele, tying into the DCU's summer event "Underworld Unleashed," was released.

These three titles, which all debuted in 1995, were cancelled in 1996. However all was not lost; not by a longshot. The cancellations of these books were done so that a single New Gods comic book, featuring the main players of these three books, would be published. The series, with "the King's" name right in the title, started up in 1997.

In early 1998, John Byrne announced his departure from DC, which resulted in a changing of the guard at Wonder Woman, his other regular DC title, and the cancellation of Jack Kirby's Fourth World. But again fans of the New Gods needed not to sorrow in the abandonment of the folks of New Genesis and Apokolips: Walt Simonson, who provided cover art for JKFW, was announced to be Byrne's replacement (Byrne himself said, somewhere, that if anyone else should do the New Gods, it should be Walt Simonson; I guess DC listened.)

In April 2000, his run began. :)
